Escape Chute Systems - IECS Integrated Escape Chute

International Safety & Supply is a global Supplier of custom designed escape chute systems

manufactured by  Survitec/Risk Safety Systems located in Houston, Texas USA.

Escaping from danger or fire has never been this easy

Escape chutes provide a means of emergency exit that permits rapid, mass evacuation from offshore installations during life threatening emergencies. It is uniquely designed to provide a relatively safe and quick method of vertical escape and is always accessible and ready for use.  it provides a unique solution for vertical escape in sometimes difficult conditions during an emergency evacuation.

A simple Escape System

The construction of the chute helps to protect the evacuees from heat and fire and is used  to deliver evacuees to safety with very little training. This is sometimes difficult or impossible using traditional rescue equipment.

The IECS System can be supplied for fixed and variable height applications, The three layered chute as shown above is ideal for fixed height installations and provides protection from heat flux when in the chute.  For variable height applications a two chute system is provided.  This consists of the top three layered chute which still provides protection from radiated heat and flux.  The lower chute on the variable height application is the netted zig zag configuration and allows the evacuees to exit at every one meter section.  Therefore if for example the facility is an FPSO then the evacuees can still escape in a ballast down condition.

IECS -   With 7 ft x 7 ft fabricated skid designed to accommodate:

            ONE or TWO   -   12 - 24 - 30 or 50 man life rafts

Purpose 7ft x 7ft Skid with access gate top chute container with hydraulically dampened lid, can be supplied to customer specific dimensions if required.   Front mounted life raft cradle suitable for qty two x 12, 24 and 30 man SOLAS rated A or B pack self righting life rafts.

Lower chute container with trap door that houses the escape chute, 25/30 man debarkation/boarding raft and stabilization plate.

The stabilization plate weight is calculated using customer supplied met ocean data and is calculated using the RSS modeling program.

Qty four x 15400Ib Kevlar ropes are used to support the stabilization plate and are attached under the main skid assembly using heavy duty shackles, the Kevlar ropes run alongside the escape chute system and through the debarkation raft and attached to the stabilization plate that sits below the water at between 6/10ft.

The  main Kevlar support cables are attached to the chute in the middle and at the last ring on the escape chute.  The cables run freely through the carabineers, this keeps the chute column inside the Kevlar support ropes but the chute at no time hold the weight from the stabilization plate.

For variable height applications any unused sections of the netted chute remain in the base of the debarkation raft when the vessel or platform is in a ballast down condition.

IECS Escape Chute Systems are designed to be mechanical and reduce failure to the lowest possible levels.  No hydraulics, pneumatics or electrical assistance is required.  The deployment mechanism is the mechanical wind down type, and is synchronized to release the lower chute trap door and front mounted life rafts cradle at the same time.

IECS -  With 14 ft x 14 ft fabricated cantilever frame

If deck space is at a minimum and a 7ft x 7ft cut out is not available with an uninterrupted drop to sea level, ISS can provide a purpose built heavy duty cantilever frame.

The RSS Cantilever frame is built in line with customer requirements and all structural calculations are provided to support the design and manufacturer.

The cantilever frame is designed to allow the 7ft x 7ft skid to drop and bolt in and can be easily removed for service or inspection.

In all cases RSS designs the frame based on customers fitting location and in most cases structural information is required to ensure the location is suitable.

RSS recently built and supplied eight IECS systems for Exxon Mobil Kiz A/B FPSO’s in Angola. Each system was supplied with a cantilever frame which is shown in the photos to the left.

IECS Escape Chute Systems are designed to be low maintenance when compared to Life Boats and similar systems available on the market.  The IECS should be inspected by the customer on a monthly basis.  RSS provide monthly and quarterly inspection and maintenance schedules.  RSS will carry out the annual inspections which would include testing and re-certifying all life rafts.  On the fifth year RSS carry out a major inspection, this would include removing and inspecting the escape chutes
